Maurice Sendak advises today’s youth: ‘Quit this life as soon as possible.’
For all the cleverness and sharp-eyed originality in his work, Sendak turns out to be an unhappy guy, haunted by what he calls a “permanent dissatisfaction” in his life. Unwanted by his parents (“I was not intended — it was an accident,” he insists) and blessed with few social skills, he spent most of his time as a child alone, sitting at the window, drawing children playing in the street. Who knew a book only 10 sentences long could inspire a film adaptation, let alone such controversy over that adaptation? Maybe it isn’t that surprising, considering that the book is Maurice Sendak’s Where The Wild Things Are, a now-beloved 1963 children’s story which was decried as too grotesque for kids when it first came out.
